“Reading Enjoyment” is Ready for School: Foregrounding Affect and Sociality in Children’s Reading for Pleasure

Abstract While debate on declines in children’s literacy is ongoing Aotearoa New Zealand, very little attention research and policy paid to reading enjoyment its capacity support the development of children. Developed alongside a series studies for pleasure this article makes theoretically informed argument place at centre education schools. Our underpinned by psycho-social conceptualisation that emphasises fundamental sociality emotion. Foregrounding affect children young people’s speaks potential teachers being with their whānau together pleasure. When are school they can participate pleasure, sharing other class members without coming into conflict priorities life outside school. If schools embed programmes, might then have greater follow communication strategy work towards collective families, whānau, communities.
